Bengaluru’s vital transport system is facing scrutiny, while the city’s crime unit is dealing with a delicate situation. Here are the top stories making waves today.

Namma Metro Under Increased Pressure for Safety Audit

Bengaluru’s Namma Metro, a crucial service for countless commuters navigating the city’s notorious traffic, is under heightened scrutiny following a series of technical failures that have sparked calls for an independent safety audit.

Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya has voiced his strong concerns regarding the frequent breakdowns of the rapid transit system, highlighting 21 significant technical disruptions reported between 2024 and June 26, 2026, even as the network imposes some of the highest metro fares in the nation. He has reached out directly to the Commissioner of Railway Safety (Southern Circle) and Karnataka’s Minister for Bengaluru Development, Krishna Byre Gowda, urging for an independent investigation and greater accountability from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).

The statistics reveal a concerning trend. In 2026 alone, Namma Metro experienced a driverless train derailment on the Yellow Line in January, a power outage at Cubbon Park in May, a fire incident at Nagasandra station in June, a city-wide smart card recharge failure on June 12, another technical issue at Cubbon Park on June 23, and a door malfunction that disrupted services on the Purple Line on June 25–26. The Purple Line has recorded 11 separate incidents over the past three years, the highest of any corridor.

While BMRCL insists that safety is its primary concern and that all incidents are managed through timely maintenance checks, the accumulation of disruptions across all operational lines is undoubtedly shaking commuter confidence.

Police Investigate Businessman’s Death at Actor’s Bengaluru Residence

The police are looking into the death of a 45-year-old businessman, Vaishak Upadhyay, who was discovered dead on the night of June 24 at the Bengaluru home of Kannada actor Krishi Thapanda. According to reports, Vaishak had been staying at the actor’s apartment for about a week while she was away. Authorities have filed an Unnatural Death Report (UDR), and so far, no suicide note has been found. The precise cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem examination at Victoria Hospital.

Investigators revealed that Vaishak had sent messages expressing distress and indicating he might harm himself shortly before his death. The actor reportedly attempted to dissuade him and informed his family before later discovering him at her residence and contacting the police. Currently, there are no indications of wrongdoing on her part, and Vaishak’s family has not claimed any foul play. Police noted that he had been struggling with depression and personal issues, including a separation from his wife.

Earlier this year, Vaishak had also come under police investigation in an unrelated extortion case involving another businessman in Bengaluru; he was questioned and subsequently released, with the Karnataka High Court later halting further inquiries into that case. The police are now concentrating on piecing together the complete timeline of events.

Metro Story Update

In a fresh development, MP Tejasvi Surya specifically called out the June 23 Cubbon Park disruption — caused by a Current Collector Device (CCD) failure that brought metro services to a standstill across the city — as “unacceptable.” He reiterated his demand that BMRCL identify the root causes of these repeated failures and put permanent corrective measures in place to restore public confidence in Namma Metro.
